5/18/2010 day4

Stayed in Rapid City last night. Up early for pancakes and sausage served at the camp ground. Got to Mt. Rushmore around 10 am Spectacular entrance to the viewing area of the monument. A beautiful sunny day although there was still a few piles of snow. On our way we saw a bunch of mule deer. They have very nice facilities gift shop, rest areas and two videos of the construction of the monument. There were 4 mountain goats that we could see up close, and a few old goats wandering around looking at the mountain. Then we went to the Crazy Horse monument located about 15 miles away. This is private project started over 50 years ago when a Chief asked Korczak Ziolkowski, a sculptor to make a monument that depicted the American Indian in positive way. The project makes its money from the concessions and gift shop sales along with donations from the private sector.[no government money] They seem to be doing quite well. Korczak is dead but his wife and children are continuing the project. [they had ten kids] We are in Spearfish, SD. tonight and tomorrow we head to Montana.

  1. I've been waiting for the pictures of the few old goats, but haven't seen them yet. Did slip down Mt. Rushmore?
